Position Details: Equipment Operator I

Location: Rockport, TX

SUMMARY OF POSITION: Operate heavy and light equipment, including tractor/trailer truck, chip spreader, backhoe, and surveying equipment; perform manual labor as part of road crew engaged in the maintenance and construction of county roads.



  •  Reports to: Road Supervisor, Foreman, or Crew leader.
  • Directs:  This is a non-supervisory position. May serve as lead person of a crew to direct less experienced employees for job completion.
  • Other: Has regular contact with other county employees and, occasionally, with the general public.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Examples of Work)

  • Operate heavy and light equipment in the repair and maintenance of county roads and bridges including, but not limited to, backhoe, tractor/trailer, chip spreader, and surveying equipment;

  • Drive 18-wheel and other trucks;

  • Assist in the cleaning and maintaining of equipment, machinery, and vehicles;

  • Prepare and maintain drainage ditches and install pipes;

  • Mow, trim grass, and haul brush;

  • Install signs for traffic control and act as "flagman;"

  • Operate two-way radio;

  • Maintain after-hours availability for emergency construction and repair;

  • Attend technical training as appropriate and available;

  • Attend quarterly safety meetings;

  • Perform clearing and clean up duties using rake and broom.

  • May assist in training other employees in proper operation and maintenance of equipment, workplace safety, job procedures, and county policies; and

  • May be required to remain available and assist with emergency preparedness and damage control/recovery in the event of hurricanes and other natural disasters.



  • Knowledge of: methods, practices, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of roadways; safe operation of heavy and light equipment and machinery used; and the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of heavy and light motorized equipment.

  • Skill/Ability: safely and effectively operate a wide range of heavy and light equipment; tolerate outside working conditions including exposure to adverse weather conditions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors, and the general public;


  • Lift/move 100-pound load from floor to chest height in proper, safe manner to prevent injury to self or others; climb ladders, sit and stand for extended periods of time; maintain repetitive motion with hands, arms, and legs; read and interpret written instructions and follow oral commands or instructions; compose and prepare written reports of daily activities; and

  • Maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities and good driving record.



  • High school graduation, or its equivalent, and ability to read and write,

  • Minimum three years of relevant experience in the operation of heavy equipment & road maintenance, or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.



Texas Class A – Commercial Driver's License
